France-based Nigerian international handball star Yusuf Faruk has officially launched a grassroots sports initiative in Sokoto State. In an effort to foster youth empowerment and give back to the community that nurtured his career, the national team standout has organized the inaugural Yusuf Faruk 2026 Handball Championship (Tagged the Yusuf Faruk Cup).

The five-day tournament officially commenced yesterday Wednesday, June 24, 2026, and is scheduled to run through Sunday, June 28, 2026. The event is being staged at the Giginya Memorial Stadium Handball Arena in Sokoto State, drawing significant attention from the regional sports community.

The competition features male and female teams grouped for round-robin and knockout series respectively. The male group includes major local contenders such as Bashar Black Handball Team, Junior Ahmad Aliyu Team, D.B.B. Handball Team, Fada Handball Team, Professional Team and Bajare Handball Team.

The opening day of the championship was a celebration of sports diplomacy, attracting an array of high-profile dignitaries. In attendance were prominent handball stakeholders, passionate lovers of the game, national referees, and some key political figures. Notably, top officials and members of the Sokoto State Ministry of Sports were present to show government backing for the initiative, commending Yusuf’s dedication to developing the state’s sporting infrastructure and talent pool.

Yusuf, who currently plays internationally for Limoges Handball (Limoges Hand 87) in France’s top-tier LNH Division 1 and represents the Nigerian Senior Men’s National Handball Team, has consistently used his platform to advocate for grassroots growth. This tournament serves as a direct pipeline for identifying raw, young talent in the region.

Day 1

The opening day of the championship delivered fierce competition and standout individual performances:

1st Match (Male Category): Junior Ahmad Aliyu secured a hard-fought 22–19 victory over Bashar Black with Muktar Shehu popularly known as Kurma emerging as the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

2nd Match (Female Category): The Elect Handball Team triumphed over Team Thunder with a 19–14 finish. Ester Peter (Aina) was named the match’s MVP for her outstanding display.

3rd Match (Male Category): Team Tambuwal (Mai Gidan Dambe) dominated Team Professional in a one-sided affair that ended 24–13. Abdulrahman Sani (Baga) walked away with the MVP honors following his prolific scoring run.

The group stage matches will continue through Friday, June 26, clearing the path for the high-stakes semi-finals on Saturday, June 27. The tournament will reach its climax on June 28, 2026, featuring the third-place playoff in the morning and the grand finale by 5:00 PM, where the champions of the Yusuf Faruk Cup will lift the trophy.

With the theme “Building Future Champions, Empowering Youth Through Sports,” Faruk Yusuf’s philanthropic initiative is already being hailed by Sokoto residents as a monumental success, injecting new life into Nigerian handball and providing local youth with a tangible pathway to international stardom.
