The Lions and Grasshoppers International Handball Legends Association has announced plans for the fourth edition of its annual U-15 Handball Championship, scheduled to take place at the Umuahia Township Stadium in Abia State from September 17 to 19, 2026.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), the association formally notified the federation of the forthcoming tournament and extended an invitation for its participation and support.
According to the association, the championship is an initiative of former and retired players of the renowned Lions and Grasshoppers International Handball Club, aimed at giving back to the sport that shaped their careers while providing a platform for the development of young handball talents.
The organisers stated that the annual championship is designed to engage young people positively through sports and contribute to reducing youth restiveness in society.
The association also commended the support received from the Handball Federation of Nigeria during the third edition of the competition, which was held in Enugu, describing the federation’s contribution as “noteworthy and memorable.”
As part of preparations for this year’s edition, the organisers appealed to the HFN President for continued collaboration and support to ensure the successful hosting of the championship.
The 2026 Lions/Grasshoppers International Legends U-15 Handball Championship is expected to bring together young handball players from across the South-East and beyond, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their talents and further promote grassroots handball development in Nigeria.
Acting President of the association, Isaac O. Isaac, and Secretary, Chidinma Linda Anosike, expressed optimism that the championship would once again serve as a valuable platform for nurturing future stars of Nigerian handball.
