The Handball Federation of Nigeria has unveiled plans for two major competitions set to further boost the growth and excitement of handball in the country in 2026.
The 2026 Handball Premier League will take place in Abuja in August 2026, with organisers promising fans and stakeholders a thrilling and memorable experience.
The federation also announced the 4×4 Handball Championship, scheduled to hold from June 16 to June 19, 2026, in Makurdi, Benue State. The competition is being described as “another handball experience,” aimed at showcasing innovation and entertainment within the sport.
President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Jibril Saidu Ojih, said the federation remains committed to creating new opportunities and platforms that will help develop handball across the country.
“The Handball Premier League and the 4×4 Handball Championship are part of our broader vision to reposition handball in Nigeria and make the sport more attractive to players, fans, sponsors, and partners,” Ojih said.
He added that the federation is determined to sustain innovation in the game while also expanding the reach of handball to different parts of the country.
“We are excited about what these events will bring to Nigerian handball. Abuja will witness a top-class Premier League, while Makurdi will host a unique 4×4 championship that promises excitement and entertainment for everyone involved,” he stated.
Ojih further called on stakeholders, supporters, and sports enthusiasts to rally behind the federation as preparations intensify for both competitions.
“With the support of stakeholders and the passion of our athletes, we are confident that 2026 will be a remarkable year for handball in Nigeria,” he concluded.
In addition to the Premier League and 4×4 Championship, the Handball Federation of Nigeria has also announced the North-Central Handball Championship, which is set to berth in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The championship is scheduled to run from July 12 to July 18, 2026, promising fans another thrilling handball experience in the north-central region of the country.
The competitions are expected to attract clubs, players, officials, and handball enthusiasts from across the country as the federation continues efforts to elevate the profile of the sport in Nigeria.
