The world of football and Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Nigerian-born Benin Republic international striker, Razak Omotoyossi, who passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at the age of 39.

However, close sources disclosed that the former football star had been battling a series of personal challenges in recent months, including a home fire accident in July, the tragic death of his elder sister just three weeks ago, and turbulence in his marital life.
Born in Agege, Lagos, Omotoyossi began his career in Nigeria with Sunshine Stars before moving to the Republic of Benin, where he went on to become one of the nation’s greatest-ever players. Between 2004 and 2016, he earned 55 caps for the Cheetahs (formerly Squirrels), scoring 21 goals to become the country’s second all-time top scorer.
One of his most iconic moments came during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, when he scored all four goals in Benin’s stunning 4-1 victory over Togo, finishing the campaign as joint-top scorer alongside Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o.
At club level, Omotoyossi enjoyed stints across the globe. He made his mark in Sweden with Helsingborgs IF, where he featured in the UEFA Champions League, before moving to France with FC Metz.
