Former Super Eagles forward, Brown Ideye, has officially announced his retirement from professional football after a career spanning nearly two decades. The 36-year-old made the announcement on Wednesday morning via an emotional post on his Instagram page, thanking God, his family, fans, coaches, teammates, agents, journalists, and Nigeria for the role they played in his journey.
“After much thought and consideration with mixed emotions, I’ve decided to retire from professional football… This game made me and gave me everything— incredible joy, sad days, the opportunity to travel and see the world, lifelong friendships and so many unforgettable memories,” Ideye wrote.

Brown Ideye, who began his professional career with Bayelsa United before moving abroad, featured for several top clubs across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. His most notable stint came in 2014 when he signed for West Bromwich Albion in the English Premier League for a then club-record ÂŁ10 million fee.
The forward also enjoyed successful spells with Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine, where he won the Ukrainian Premier League and Ukrainian Cup, and Olympiacos in Greece, where he helped the club to the Super League title.
Ideye also played in Switzerland, France, Turkey, Spain, China, and Kuwait, leaving his mark as a reliable striker with an eye for crucial goals.
At the international level, Ideye earned over 30 caps for Nigeria, scoring six goals. He was part of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad under the late Stephen Keshi, a triumph that ended the country’s 19-year wait for continental glory.
His work rate, pace, and commitment to the national team earned him respect from fans and teammates alike, and he remains remembered as one of the forwards who carried Nigeria through a transitional era.
Although he has drawn the curtain on his professional playing days, Ideye assured fans that football will remain a part of his life:
“Though my time as a pro-player has come to an end, football will always be a part of my life as I enter my next chapter,” he wrote.
