Team Nigeria is poised for a historic campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as the nation’s elite athletes complete their final preparations ahead of the commencement of competition on Friday, July 24.

After months of strategic planning and weeks of intensive high-performance training in Aberdeen, the Nigerian contingent has officially settled into the Games Village with confidence and optimism running high.

The team’s delegation was completed on Thursday following the arrival of the national 3×3 basketball team from its training base in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, bringing together one of Nigeria’s strongest-ever Commonwealth Games contingents.
Packed with world champions, world record holders, Diamond League winners, African champions and Paralympic gold medalists, Team Nigeria enters Glasgow with genuine aspirations of delivering one of its most successful outings in Commonwealth Games history.

The nation’s medal campaign will begin with one of its strongest events—Para Powerlifting—where Nigeria has consistently established itself as a global powerhouse.

Leading the charge is Team Nigeria Captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo, the reigning Commonwealth champion, two-time Paralympic gold medalist and four-time world champion. Fresh from successfully defending her world title in Paris, Oluwafemiayo remains the world’s number one-ranked athlete in the women’s heavyweight category and is widely tipped to retain the Commonwealth crown she won in Birmingham.

Joining her is reigning world champion Rita Ferdinand, one of the brightest stars in international Para Powerlifting. Ferdinand heads into the Games in outstanding form after producing a remarkable 154kg lift at the African Open Championships in Oran, Algeria—matching the women’s world record while setting a new African record in the up to 79kg class.

Nigeria’s athletics team also arrives in Scotland with a formidable blend of proven champions and exciting emerging talents capable of dominating the track and field events.
Sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi has enjoyed a phenomenal breakthrough season, claiming both the NCAA Indoor 60m and Outdoor 100m titles for Auburn University before equalling Nigeria’s national 100m record of 9.84 seconds. His victories over reigning world champion Oblique Seville at both the Prefontaine Classic and the London Diamond League have firmly established him among the favourites for Commonwealth gold.
World record holder Tobi Amusan will be chasing history as she seeks an unprecedented third consecutive Commonwealth Games title in the women’s 100m hurdles. The Nigerian superstar has been in scintillating form throughout the 2026 season, winning the African Championships, the Rabat Diamond League and most recently the Paris Diamond League in a season-best 12.28 seconds.
In the field events, African record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi carries Nigeria’s hopes in the men’s shot put. The two-time African champion and multiple African Games gold medalist will be aiming to convert his impressive continental dominance into Commonwealth success.
Nigeria’s boxing team will be led by middleweight sensation Patricia Mbata, whose rapid rise has attracted widespread attention across African boxing. The British-born boxer, who switched her sporting allegiance to Nigeria, claimed gold at the African Games and impressed during the national trials. Inspired by heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, Mbata will be making her Commonwealth Games debut with ambitions of securing a podium finish.
Beyond the impressive talent within the squad, Team Nigeria’s confidence has been significantly boosted by unprecedented welfare reforms introduced by the National Sports Commission (NSC).
Under the leadership of NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, the Commission has implemented one of the most comprehensive athlete welfare packages in Nigeria’s sporting history.
As part of the reforms, every athlete and official received an upfront ₦500,000 travel support grant, while both local and overseas camping allowances were substantially increased. Additionally, gold medalists at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games stand to receive up to $8,000 in combined rewards and performance bonuses, with enhanced incentives also approved for silver and bronze medal winners.
The improved welfare package has been widely welcomed by athletes and officials, providing an added layer of motivation as Nigeria targets another memorable Commonwealth Games campaign.
With elite athletes in peak condition, strong administrative support and renewed confidence within the camp, Team Nigeria heads into Glasgow determined not merely to compete but to challenge for honours across multiple disciplines.
As competition gets underway, the Green and White flag will once again be carried by a generation of athletes eager to write another glorious chapter in Nigeria’s rich sporting history on the Commonwealth stage.
