Egypt began their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 campaign with a dramatic 2–1 victory over a resilient Zimbabwe side, as talismanic forward Mohamed Salah struck on the stroke of full time to secure maximum points for the Pharaohs.

The breakthrough arrived through Omar Marmoush, who had been largely subdued until that moment. A mazy run saw him burst clear before firing past goalkeeper Arubi to restore parity and swing the momentum Egypt’s way.

With the match finely poised, Egypt pressed for a winner—and it came from the man they rely on most. Quiet for much of the evening, Mohamed Salah demonstrated his class and composure in the 90th minute. Seizing on a decisive moment, the Liverpool star shielded the ball expertly, controlled under pressure, and turned to finish with the calm authority of a seasoned champion, silencing the vociferous Zimbabwean support that had sung relentlessly through the chilly night.

At the final whistle, jubilation swept through the Egyptian camp, while Zimbabwe were left to rue what might have been. The Warriors delivered a courageous and well-organised performance and, on another night, could have earned at least a point. Though defeated, they leave with pride intact and valuable lessons ahead of their next outing, where points remain firmly within reach.
