The curtain fell on the 2026 Southwest 4×4 Handball Championship in spectacular fashion as Lagos Seasider were crowned champions following the conclusion of an action-packed tournament at the Handball Court of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan. The championship, which brought together leading clubs and handball academies from across the Southwest region and Lagos State, lived up to expectations with high-quality competition.
Lagos Seasider completed an outstanding unbeaten campaign to emerge deserving champions after overcoming hosts Oluyole Warriors in the championship final, while Osun United Handball Club finished the tournament on a high by securing third place after an impressive campaign. Oluyole Warriors claimed the runners-up position following a commendable performance on home soil, while Mindscope Handball Academy finished fourth. The successful championship further underscored the Handball Federation of Nigeria’s commitment to grassroots development and the continued growth of the sport across the Southwest zone.
The closing ceremony featured the presentation of medals, trophies and individual awards to deserving teams and players. Rotibi Gbenga emerged as the Highest Goal Scorer of the championship after registering an impressive 44 goals in four matches, while Akintunde Martins of Oluyole Warriors was named Best Goalkeeper in recognition of his outstanding performances throughout the tournament. Korede Kuti, popularly known as “Benteke,” also of Oluyole Warriors, received the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, while the Ekiti State Handball Team was honoured with the Fair Play Award for their exemplary conduct during the competition.
Awards and trophies were presented by distinguished personalities, including handball veteran and former Commissioner from Ekiti State, Hon. Mrs. Olaniyan. Other dignitaries in attendance included the Southwest Zonal Representative on the Board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Hon. Gbenga Adewusi Arole, HFN Board Member Mrs. Adeola Opeifa, staff of the Oyo State Sports Council as well as handball legends, former national coaches, veterans of the game and other key stakeholders.
Hon. Arole Adewusi, the Southwest Zonal Representative and the chief host expressed profound appreciation to the participating teams, officials, coaches, sponsors, media partners and supporters for their invaluable contributions towards the successful staging of another memorable edition of the Southwest 4×4 Handball Championship.
He particularly appreciated the support he received from the president of Handball Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Jubril, the immediate past president Mr. Samuel Ocheo, former National player and a veteran of the game Adeyemi George Osawe, the Oyo State Handball Association and everyone present. “They didn’t let us down and we are proud to have them in the Southwest,” he concluded.
