The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over alleged criminal offences including forgery, cyberstalking, and other infractions currently under investigation.
In a statement issued on Friday by Force Public Relations Officer DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi (Ref No. CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/483), the Police described reports of brutality and torture as “false, grossly misleading, and aimed at maligning state institutions.”
According to the statement, Sowore’s arrest was carried out in compliance with constitutional safeguards, with the activist released on bail within the 48-hour window stipulated under Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution. The Police said he had been informed of the charges and is expected to appear in court in the coming days.
On allegations that Sowore sustained injuries while in custody, the Force said the viral image showing him with a bandaged arm was “mischievously presented to mislead the public,” claiming the bandage was part of his personal belongings prior to detention. The Police added that the Inspector-General of Police ordered an internal probe to determine how he had access to the item during custody, noting that Sowore refused two separate medical examinations offered on August 7 and 8.
“The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy for torture in line with the Anti-Torture Act, 2017,” Adejobi stated, adding that the detention was backed by a valid remand order from a competent court.
The Force urged the media and civil society to avoid sensationalism and exercise professional responsibility in their reports, warning that unfounded claims could undermine public trust and ongoing investigations.
“The Police remain committed to the protection of human rights, respect for the rule of law, and the pursuit of justice without fear or favour. No individual—regardless of status or influence—is above the law,” the statement concluded.
