- The Osun State contingent to the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) received a formal send-forth on Wednesday ahead of their departure to Asaba, Delta State, where the Games will officially open on Friday, August 29, 2025.
Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Engr. Abiola Jeremiah Awoyeye, represented both the Governor, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, and the Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi, who also doubles as Commissioner for Sports, at the brief meeting in Osogbo.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the state government, Hon. Awoyeye charged the athletes to be worthy ambassadors of Osun both on and off the field of play.
“I bring you good tidings from Mr. Governor, Senator Ademola Jackson Adeleke. The governor has approved your participation to represent the state. I won’t say much, but I must ask you to make sure you are good ambassadors of Osun State. We don’t want to hear bad reports about you. Go there, compete with discipline, and make us proud,” he said.
In response, one of the athletes, a chess player, Olaoluwa Semilore, expressed gratitude to Governor Adeleke and assured the state of a strong performance.
“On behalf of my fellow athletes, I appreciate the governor for his support. We promise to return with medals and make Osun proud,” he said.
The contingent, led by the General Manager of the Osun State Sports Council, Mr. Ademola Daini, will compete in over 24 sporting disciplines, including athletics, basketball, boxing, chess, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, wrestling, and weightlifting.
The Osun athletes departed Osogbo on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, immediately after the brief send forth meeting, for Asaba, with high hopes of leaving a mark at the Games.
