The Osun State contingent to the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) is set to depart Osogbo, the state capital, on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, for Asaba, Delta State, venue of this year’s edition.
Before the team’s departure, a brief farewell meeting will be held where the Deputy Governor of Osun State and Commissioner for Sports, Prince Kola Adewusi, alongside the Chairman House Committee on Sports, Hon. Abiola Jeremiah Awoyeye, will formally send off the athletes with goodwill messages.
Other dignitaries expected at the event include the General Manager of Osun State Sports Council, Mr. Ademola Daini, who will lead the contingent; the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Football Matters, Mr. Kehinde Johnson; the Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports, Mr. Layi Adesiyan; Director of Organization, Mrs. Ronke Ogunbanwo; Director of Coaching and Training, Mrs. Osho Adejoke; Heads of Coaching Divisions of the Council; and members of the press.
Speaking ahead of the departure, Mr. Daini expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness to excel at the Games.
“Our contingent have put finishing touches to their training. The coaches will allow the athletes rest tomorrow before we set out early on Wednesday morning. We are not only going to Asaba to be counted among the participants, we are going there to make a real impact. The governor has continued to invest in sports and in return, we want to make him proud. By God’s grace, we will deliver results and fly the Osun flag high in Asaba,” he said.
The Osun delegation will compete in 24 sporting disciplines, including Athletics, Para Athletics, Ayo, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Chess, Cycling, Dart, Gymnastics, Judo, Karate, Kick-boxing, Powerlifting, Scrabble, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Para Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.
The 9th National Youth Games officially open on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
The General Manager further assured the people of Osun that the team is fully prepared, disciplined, and motivated to compete with excellence while showcasing the immense sporting talents the state is known for.
