Nigeria’s weightlifting team continued its dazzling run at the ongoing 2025 Africa Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship in Accra, Ghana, with Florence Olarinoye winning six gold medals on Monday evening.
Competing in the 58kg female category, Olarinoye—who previously clinched gold at the 2023 National Youth Games (NYG) and silver at the 2024 National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State—dominated the platform. She lifted 71kg in snatch, 86kg in clean and jerk, and a combined total of 157kg, securing three gold medals in the Junior event and three more in the Youth event.
Her triumph brought Nigeria’s medal tally to eight gold and one silver at the championship. Earlier on Monday, Ezenwa Chinaza Cecilia had opened Nigeria’s medal account by winning two gold and one silver. Ezenwa impressed with lifts of 63kg in snatch, 72kg in clean and jerk, and 135kg total, paving the way for the country’s medal rush.
The medal presentation ceremony is scheduled for today at the Ga Mashie Hall, Trust Sports Emporium, Accra, where Nigeria’s young lifters will officially receive their honors.
The achievements come as a boost for the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), which only days earlier successfully concluded its 2025 Elective Congress. The congress returned Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Aladi as president for another four-year term, signaling renewed leadership and momentum for the sport.
The 2025 Africa Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship commenced in Accra on Friday, August 15, and will run until Friday, August 22, 2025.
With Olarinoye and Ezenwa leading the charge, Nigeria has firmly announced its presence on the continental stage, raising hopes for more podium finishes before the competition concludes.
