A fresh migration crisis unfolded on Thursday after thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta in one of the largest mass border breaches witnessed in recent years.
According to Reuters, between 2,000 and 3,000 migrants entered the Spanish territory within hours, overwhelming border security and prompting Madrid to launch an immediate military and police reinforcement operation.
Dramatic footage from the border showed hundreds of migrants swimming around the Tarajal breakwater with the aid of inflatable tubes, while others forced their way through a border gate before rushing into the city, chanting “Long live Spain.”
The unprecedented influx stretched the capabilities of Spain’s Guardia Civil officers, who struggled to contain the large numbers arriving simultaneously.

Ceuta Regional President Juan Jesus Vivas described the situation as a humanitarian emergency, warning that reception centres for unaccompanied minors are operating several times beyond their designed capacity. The sudden arrival of thousands of migrants also disrupted normal commercial activities, with many businesses closing their doors amid concerns over public safety and possible disturbances.
Reacting swiftly, Spain’s Interior Ministry announced the deployment of three army platoons, a military diving unit, a naval vessel and an additional 200 special police officers to reinforce security along the enclave’s border by Friday. Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to the immediate deportation of individuals who entered the territory illegally.
The latest incident has drawn comparisons with the May 2021 migration crisis, when approximately 10,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta over a matter of days, triggering diplomatic tensions between Spain and Morocco and placing enormous pressure on local authorities.
The renewed surge underscores the continuing migration challenges facing European border regions, with Ceuta once again emerging as one of the continent’s most sensitive entry points for irregular migration.
