Portuguese international midfielder Ruben Neves has publicly condemned a Portuguese magazine after it published a controversial front-page image of him appearing to kiss the widow of his late teammate, Diogo Jota.

“Good afternoon. I always believe in the good in people, I’ve been warned not to, I’ve already been deceived, and I never wish bad on anyone,” Neves began. “The person who put this picture on the magazine cover does not deserve to be happy, just like the choice of it was not happy.”
Neves clarified that he has been in a long-term relationship with his wife, Débora Lourenço, for over 11 years, and together they have built a family that makes him proud. He emphasized that neither he nor his wife has ever been involved in any controversy during that time.
Highlighting his support for Rute, Jota’s widow, Neves explained: “We have done our best to help Rute and her family in the best way we can. The choice of this photo is as unhappy as the person who chose it, and the person who posted it.”
The Al Hilal star went on to stress that while he respects the work of journalists, he cannot respect those who disregard the dignity of others.
“Again I say, I’m proud of the woman I have, the family I have. We’re proud of Rute, for the strength she’s had. We’re here for whatever it takes, she knows. Thank you,” he concluded.
The magazine in question has not yet responded to Neves’ criticism, but the incident has sparked debate in Portugal about media ethics and sensitivity in reporting personal matters.
