The Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Adamasingba, Ibadan, Oyo State, is set to become the epicenter of Nigerian handball as host of the forthcoming 2026 Southwest 4×4 Handball Championship.
Scheduled to run from Monday, August 3 to Thursday, August 6, 2026, the regional tournament is organized under the auspices of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) South West Zone, driven by its core mandate of “Promoting Handball, Building Champions” and uniting the region under the motto “One Region, One Goal… Stronger Together!”
Tournament Breakdown & Strategic Objectives
The championship will feature male teams representing states and accredited academies across the six Southwest states: Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Lagos.
To maintain competitive balance and streamline logistics, the HFN South West Zone has established specific delegation quotas for each participating State and Academy:

Understanding 4×4 Handball: Innovation Built for Sustainability
While the primary focus of the Ibadan showpiece is regional supremacy and grassroots scouting, the tournament also marks a major milestone in the roll-out of the 4×4 Handball format in Nigeria under the supervision of the HFN.
Much like 3×3 Basketball, 5-a-side Football (Futsal), and 5-a-side Field Hockey, 4×4 Handball is an innovative, fast-paced adaptation of the traditional 7-a-side game designed to maximize energy, technical skill, and spectator engagement.
Core Structure of the 4×4 Format
Court Setup: Played on a compact half-court surface.
On-Court Composition: 4 active players per team on the court (3 outcourt players + 1 goalkeeper).
Roster Limits: Up to 4 substitutes per team, maintaining high-intensity rotations.
Match Timing: Games consist of 5 minutes of attack and 5 minutes of defense.
Tie-Breaker System: If the match ends in a draw at the expiration of regulation time, teams will play 2 additional minutes of extra time. If the score remains tied after extra time, the match will be decided by a penalty shootout.
Pace of Play: High-speed transitions, quick decision-making, and higher shooting frequencies per minute.

The introduction of 4×4 Handball arrives at a critical juncture for team sports in Nigeria. In recent times, full-sided handball (7-a-side) has faced severe existential threats, including exclusion from major national events like the National Sports Festival (NSF) by the National Sports Commission (NSC). The primary justification cited by sports authorities has been the financial burden placed on state sports councils, many of which struggle to fund large traveling delegations for team sports.
By reducing the squad size from 14+ contingent members down to a compact roster, the 4×4 format dramatically reduces operational costs, including travel, accommodation, feeding, and kit logistics.
Sports administrators and HFN stakeholders express optimism that this streamlined model will serve as a viable template to convince the NSC and state governments to re-include handball in major multi-sport games, ensuring that upcoming generations of handball athletes are not deprived of national platforms.
